STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — Wayfair, an international online retailer based in Boston, has opened a distribution center on Foltz Parkway, just south of Ohio 82.
The company is leasing about 68,300 square feet of a new multi-tenant building measuring about 180,000 square feet, Brent Painter, Strongsville’s economic development director, told cleveland.com last week.
“The additional space available within the building is currently being marketed for lease,” Painter said in an email. “No announcements (have been made) yet on additional tenants.”
The developer of the new building is Scannell Properties, an Indianapolis firm.
Painter said construction of the building was completed within the past month. Wayfair has received an occupancy permit from the city and is now operating in the building, although no vehicles were parked outside early Monday morning (Dec. 7).
City Council is considering entering into a tax-increment financing agreement for the Wayfair building. Under the TIF agreement, new property taxes generated by improvements to the Wayfair property would go toward infrastructure improvements there for 30 years, except for the amounts that would go to the Strongsville schools and Polaris Career Center in Middleburg Heights.
Those improvements might include, for example, widening Foltz Parkway, building curbs and sidewalks, installing lights and traffic signals, or constructing sewers in the area.
Council may approve the Wayfair TIF, along with four other TIF agreements, at its meeting Monday (Dec. 7).
According to its website, Wayfair was established in 2002 by high school classmates Steve Conine and Niraj Shah in Boston. They initially sold stereo racks and stands, but soon expanded into home furnishings and décor.
Today, Wayfair sells more than 18 million products and employs more than 16,700 workers in locations throughout North America and Europe. The company generated $13 billion in net revenue for the 12 months ending Sept. 30.
In addition to Boston, Wayfair has corporate headquarters in Berlin and London.
